The Alst Carnaval is one of the most popular in Belgium. Preparation for Wit BovenZwart, reenacts the Aalst Carnival 1946, the first one after its suspension during WWII, through paintings translated from an original sixteen millimeter film. The project focuses on a folk group from Brugge called ‘Wit boven Zwart’ (White on Black in Flemish). With this name they wanted to make explícit their resistance towards the occupiers identified as ‘the blacks’. In fact, there were several folk groups under this name during the forties in Belgium which disappeared in the fifties when the name failed out of favour considering the conflict with the colony in Congo.
